K2F mag

I have a Mag  which I guess came off a dommy.  It has a  plate with the following stampings,   K2F  AC160    423798  or could be B not 8     do we have a mag man who can translate?.

That's helpful.  Now I need to check the range of the auto advance unit as I think there could be a difference . Its my fall back plan if the ignition system on the 99 or Atlas fails. The self extracting thread is not engaging ,need to fix that. The Adv has the right no of teeth so its likely that it will also have the correct range. Any other differences between the BSA spec and Norton?. Angled pickups?.

Robert hello again, There is usually another small stamping on the magneto plate with either three or four digits giving the month and year of manufacture. e.g. 364 signifies March 1964 ; 1052 gives October 1952 ; 862 is August 1962 and so on.  Obviously mags tend to move freely between between other types and models of bikes. Bsa, Triumph as well as Norton all utilised counter-clockwise Lucas K2F types.   Until the 18D2 coil ignition Dominators most bikes had black label K2fs then in 1961 they started fitting red label manual advance K2FCs to 88SSs and automatic advance red label K2FCs to the 650SSs.  In 1963 they went back to black label K2Fs for the (newly introduced) Atlas, the 88SS and 650SS. Obviously with a firm like Norton customers could specify certain items to fit especially on the Dominator Specials. So there were many bikes leaving the factory with different magnetos including K2FC, K2FC(WADER), K2FR some with manual control and some with automatic.  I believe some had BTH mags as well.  Cheers, Howard

HI Howard, looks like mine is a Jan 60 mag for an A10 but fitted with a Norton adv unit. I have another K2f  with manual adv  I think the ref is 42413A . I think this is one I took appart some 25 years ago ,which pretty miuch guarantees it will not work!!.  Hopefully I can do a better job now.

So Robert, me again - Here is some further info about your magneto.  My 1960 A7 has a Lucas clip-on pick-up type with the number 42379B from 460.  It is the typical BSA type with a fixed alloy end cover containing the cut-out button.  I also have 42379D on an 88SS from364 with a screw on end cap with a black plastic insert and stud for the cut-out wire. The pick-ups are also clip-on.  Another of my engines has 42379A from 758 and this is a manual advance type with bolt-on pickups and a screw-on end cap.   Hopefully Paul will enlighten us to what the numbers mean.  I doubt if the position of the maximum flux will vary from a BSA, Triumph or Norton but obviously varying the ignition timing with an auto advance unit is different to moving the cam ring manually,  which will move the spark in relation to the maximum flux position.  Ho hum regards, Howard

I'm beginning to get the picture now, No idea which mag will give  the best spark ,so will try to set both up.  If the manual turns out best I will need a sprocket for it.  If I was building up a bike I would get one sorted by a pro.
