I have reason to believe that my vertical shaft has been shortened but can't find any spec on the original length. Anyone got one available to measure? Any help greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Mike

Thanks Ian....
......mine measures closer to 8 1/2" so someone messed with it. That's what I encounter at every turn trying to put this odd collection of bits into a motor. Looks like I can account for this with a thicker coupling.

Check the Oldham couplings
They came in assorted sizes. A 1/8" variation doesn't sound drastic especially when you could be working with decompression plates, grinding head to cylinder joint and have the cam box mounted on irregular cast lugs that can need aligning etc.
If its "post manufacture" re-machined you should be able to recognise the tooling marks as original or not.
I have built a couple but never recorded the actual length, only set the float...
Nice Job !!!

The upshot of my investigation.....
... is that the bearing in the lower bevel housing seems to sit deeper than normal which results in the shaft needing a very thin coupling on the bottom and a very thick one on top. I misinterpreted this situation as a short shaft. With a mish-mash of parts from multiple sources, assembly is proving challenging.....
Thanks for the help and encouragement.
