Hello George

I have the same front brake on my Triton which I am working on .I cannot exactly help very much because my Triton does not have a frame no. and I am currently trying to get a cable for the front brake . I tend to think the brake is off a late dommie or atlas .My one needs a overhaul aswell . I will watch your replies so that I can identify the brake and get the cable . I have had the Triton since 1980 and not touched till 6 weeks ago

Snap!! I last worked on my bike in early 80's when I acquired the brake, had the bike since 1970, can give you dimensions and pictures of the brake cable I have if it is of any help, not in the best of condition, and will get new one if possible.

Definately the same brake, I've just checked my brake cable, overall 381/2" long with outer at 341/2" giving only 4" of free playGeorge

Thank you George

That size gives me something to work on . I will probably have to get the cable made up to those measurements . I think it is a dommie brake I have an alloy dunlop rim

Would be nice if someone could come up with the info on converting the sls to tls. I'm sure lots of owners would be interested.

Hi Robert, I don't think it is a modified standrard brake plate, I have a standard one and the casting marks inside are different, the air scoop and 2 air outlet holes are cast in with no evidence of welding.

This TLS brake plate is not the usual Commando type. Neither is it a John Tickle and I don't think it is an Eddie Dow conversion. The brake shoes are very strange. It is possible to convert a standard Dommie plate to TLS but this version has quite a meaty air scoop on the front. Most conversions have just a thin chunk of bent alloy plate.

Dave Degens (Dresda Man) used to do conversion of SLS to internal TLS. They were quite a work of art looking absolutely standard from the outside. The drawback being that they had to be adjusted before fitting which like magneto timing can take several attempts.

A firm called Marchant & Durward produceda 2ls brake plate in the 60's and from what my dodgy memory recalls, looked something like this.

The link below may be of interest although it refers mainly to rear sets. The cable measurements all correspond to those for my John Tickle brake which, if thesource is accurate,a single companyproduced for various suppliers (Marchant & Ward,Tickle, Dunstall etc).

http://www.accessnorton.com/british-made-marchant-durward-rearsets-t13729.html

'Same as the tickle set up. Company down Devon way made them for everyone, including Dunstall. Marchant & Durward made a lovely twin leading shoe brake.'

The rear sets shown in the pictures are the same as a new set of Dunstall Replicas I recently sourced from Don Prender (madass140) in the Philippines.
