Twin leading shoe front brake

Hi

I am considering fitting a TLS brake to my Dommie front hub toupgrade it's stopping performance.

Both Andover Norton and RGM sell these. Is it a straight forward swap over and does anyone have a view as to which is best to purchase?

Thanks Ian

The only complication I can think of is finding a ready made cable. The Commando one is about 6" too long. Maybe it is just mine but the distance from anchor to lever is different.David

It will still need carefull setting up and regular attention to give its best which will be out performed by neglected Disc braked cars.

I have been very pleased with my Norvil one but it took me a while to realise that the front wheel was not central in the forks. I had to buy a new offside fork leg and it is now fine.

As David has pointed out the complication of going 2LS, with a Dominator, is the cable. Aside the awkward lengths available, the other problem is the threaded fitting that anchors the cable to the plate. This will probably need to have a UNF thread. Dominator cables have a different thread. Cycle or huge BA?

On my Atlas, I got the drum skimmed and the brake shoes turned to match. The improvement was unbelievable, turning a previously poor performer into a tyre squealing special. Far cheaper than a 2LS conversion.

Phil.. that reminds me. I use an over long Commando cable. But PO must have done something else. So I changed the anchor. It was easier to rivet the new one in place than I expected. Why don't RGM or Norvil or Andover offer the correct cable at the same time? Surely most tls plates are bought by Dommie owners?

On my ES2 Mk 2 I fitted the tls and also had the brake shoes/drum skimmed at the same time. The improvement was significant - real braking instead of a stead slow down.

You will need to check the dimensions of the cable and adjuster threads but it is pretty easy. Someone like Johnsons who advertise in OBM etc will soon knock you up a cable once you provide them with the specification. Best to go with the thicker inner like on the Commandos rather than the thinner inner used previously.

I would avoid the cable with the built in brake light switch if offered. It's just a source of water ingress IMHO

Modern linings are generally too hard to be effective. If you can, get some NOS shoes and linings or get old ones relined by one of the specialists and specify Ferodo AM2 or equivalent.

Thanks Gordon,I would not be surprised to find some NOS drilled linings lurking in my shed. A set of rivets may be needed tho.

Bonded linings do have a tendency to unbond eventually - not a good thing to happen. Rivets are a bit more secure. VMCC journal normally has adverts for brake lining specialists for rivets etc.
