TLS adjustment

Forums

Been doing a few tweaks to the front end of the ol' Atlas and noticed the new shoes I fitted a few months back on the John Tickle TLS front brake are wearing slightly irregularly (see pics) The top side seems ok but the lower side isn't.

It actually still works well as it is and I thought I'd got it right last time I adjusted it, but obviously not.

Get it spot on and I reckon a few stoppies will be in order!

I have always relieved the leading edge on brake shoes to stop grabbing. But in this case easing the worn area will allow the unworn to come into contact correctly. Then it must be down to adjustement of the link rod.

I set my link up off the bike with the brake plate on the bench, and adjusted until both cams lift at exactly the same time.  And as Al says, shave the leading edges.  It can grab ferociously from cold when it's been left unused for too long.  Yours have a bit to go before they are worn in. Remember to take a firm grip on the brake lever to finally centre it in the wheel before tightening the wheel nut.

Hi Richard

I sorted my Tickle TLS on my 650SS a few years ago. Initially I tried the Commando TLS shoes from RGM but they weren't right so were sent back. In the end I liaised with Saftek who did a really good, quick, reasonably priced job. They have several places up and down the country though I used their Cleckheaton depot as it's more local to me. Posted the shoes off to them after phoning them for pricing and they were back within a few days.

Hope this helps.

Hi Lance,

thanks for the info re getting the shoes relined, on closer inspection who ever relined them before was a bit of a butcher, I’ve got a cracked shoe & the other shoe has multiple rivet holes so Im going to have to see about new shoes! Back to searching on the web. I’ll give Saftek a call , thanks again for your info

regards Richard
