synchronising twin carb cables

Forums

Currently playing with twin concentrics with a cable spliter and adjusters on the carb tops. Unable to get near slides as box filter in way . Can set tickover and mixture by ear or Colourtune no prob . but do not want to disturb filter box . Anyone found another  reasonable way of synchronising slide lift? ,suspect will have to short out plugs in turn on small throttle setting and watch rev counter. May have to drop float bowls to match needle lifting but its very tight with linked banjos and no room. Another Question, Does the pazon system as fitted to a 650 SS normaly kick back on starting ?. To me this suggests its a little too far advanced. .There are no published carb or timing  settings for this bike , its all experimental .

Robert...can you check the slides lift together by feeling when the slack just goes at the same time from both cable sleeves at the entry points on top of the carbs?

Very tight in there ,and yes tried that but not sensitive enough,  I suspect the splitter is also a bit trapped/twisted , not really enough time to do a proper ( BOB JOB!) as I am split between half a dozen problem bikes  and the usual Norton nuts ! .

hello,  Robert

if you suspect the timing is out. would that need to be sorted first . it may effect tick over ect, then attempt to adjust the throttle cables.

Hi Barry , no timing figures ever printed for this beast. But it was set by Norton genius , but perhaps the advance curve is not quite right for this motor as the bore/ stroke is very  different   (oversquare) to the long stroke motor the fitted Pazon was built for. It may need a custom curve to give less advance on tickover and still give correct advance at max revs . If it was the old centrifugal system I could do it myself. Have to talk to pazon .

hello,  Robert

i have fitted a pazon in the past. i had the bike on a charger topping up the battery. i forgot i had left the charger on. as i kicked the bike up to start it the lead fell off the battery but the charger lead was still attatched to the lead on the bike.  when it started it backfired from both exhausts and carbs it made me jump for sure.

it made me think after, what with the charger being a rough dc output.  is the power smoothed enough coming from the charging system on the bikes to suit electronic ignition systems. or the like

Hi Robert,

On my 650, I disconnect the balance pipe that runs between the 2 alloy spacers twixt head and carbs and use the tappings to connect my vacuum gauges. Makes balancing simple.

HI George, This beast was built before balance pipes came into fashion, sadly. If it comes appart in future (sincerely hope not as no spares made) then we will build in balance pipes. When I have done the best I can ,am considering a Dyno run to see where we are on mixtures and timing. It won't be anything like a Commercial Dyno Run.
