Swinging arm?

Forums

Yet another hurdle in bringing my 1961 '99' up to spec!

Today I decided to check to swinging arm (I wish I hadn't). The spindle is solid in the swinging arm, I think it may have been like this for some considerable time. I tried some mild brute force but with no result. I cannot see anyway round this one and would welcome any suggestions to remove the spindle .

I am quite prepared to sacrifice the spindle, bushes and spacer if necessary as I can replace them, but must save the swinging arm as I do not think I can get another?

Hi Don. Another case of a simple job turning into a nightmare. Here's how I would approach it.

First spray the ends of the swing arm behind the frame lugs with penetrating oil. Do both sides and spray repeatedly over hour intervalsseveral times. Loosen the nuts on both sides about 3 turns. Then you can either use a large diameter steel or brass drift, or aim very accurately at the nuts directly. Use a club hammer and hit each side alternatively with a high speed blow. You will probably find that bending over the bike from the opposite side of each nutwill provide the best position to secure an accurate powerful blow.

Just hit each nut once and then do the opposite sides. I'm pretty sure after several blows the spindle will start to move. You will then have to progessively unsrew one nut further and furthe to increase the movement, but I would still knock it back and forth untill it is moving easily. Also continue with the penetrating oil. PLUS GAS is best IMHO...better than WD40. You will eventually require a steel rod to drive the spindle right through from any side you choose.

You may well damage severely the nuts but I'm sure you'll be more than relieved to get the spindle out.

Good Luck

Les H
