Starter for the Dommi?

Apparently Alton do not have plans to supply a starter motor for use with heavy twins.

Has anyone thought of grafting a commando  primary chain case to fit our engines - then we might we be able to fit starter motors and keep us riding for a while longer?

Or is it not that simple?

Or are we too hung up on maintaining originality.

I have not measured them, but I believe the Commando primary case is shorter than a Dominator one.

Various engineers, worldwide, have looked at providing the Dominator with an electric start. This includes two versions that use a timing side mounting and one that is sits on the primary side. I do believe that one of these electric starters got a serious mention in a Roadholder a year or two back. Our RH  magazine editor, Mark Woodward, would probably have the latest news.

Most of the Hybrid 750s use an alloy primary chain case set-up similar to the Commando. Although the gearbox is mounted differently, could this be another starting point to help go electric?

Thanks Phil, I have emailed Mark for his remarks. I would think a starter running through the timing side would be problematic - would it be robust enough.

2020 saw an article in RH with a timing side starter.

You headed the forum question, Roger.

Electric start problems. I’ve seen starters on other makes of motorcycle, and it seems to me that for the starter to be successful you need one of two things as the cranking speed is only about a third of the speed of a good kick.

Either you need coil ignition to get a spark at a low speed rotation. Or you need an exhaust valve lifter to get the motor turning.

Perhaps it's worth fitting a valve lifter first. Maybe that's all they need.  A 500 Dommie is like kicking over a 250cc bike  but a 750 is like 375cc. Norton's Model 50 had only 350cc but it had a valve lifter.

Am a devoted singles rider but also have a couple of twins.  There is nothing more delightful than going through the prestart routine and prodding a long term stood twin and it fires half way down the stroke every time. Mag spark and regular fuel. 

My friend had two similar and were exactly the same. Both set up by Ian and Arthur Hind of Derby and this club during restoration and brought out once a year for MOT or just to confirm they were healthy. 

If you are not starting easily then maybe invest in your set up rather than electric start.  As an ex  trials rider I also kick with left foot.  For dodgy knee riders have you tried that?

The singles can be a different kettle of fish.  A Velo with Alton did nothing but burst gears but it was only fitted because the previous owner didn't get the starting method right.  Somewhat different to a Norton but set up and technique are all important.
