Hi Tim,

All settings on mine are by the book.

Even had the head off because it sounded like a bag of nails (Run in and OK now...oil changes  X2 etc, without further attention.  No spin off filter.

The difference is that I use a Boyer electronic mag replacement,,,,Untouched.

Hope this helps,

Neil.

Hi Neil and fellow sufferers

Apology for delay with rest of 650SS settings:

Single Amal 930 MK1 Carb'

30mm inlet tracts

Pilot Air Screw 1 1/2 turns out

(Stay-Up) Float level: 5.0mm below float bowl gasket face

Gauze Air Filter 90623 (wash in petrol and dry before refitting)

Main Jet: 240, Pilot Jet: 25, Needle Jet: 106, Needle Position: 2, Throttle Valve (Slide): 3 1/2

With parts prices rocketing (like everything else!) these settings may provide a useful starting point

(Of course will need to be changed [made richer] to run without air filter)

Hi Tim,

Nice to see your bike in R/H.  I should have been there as 'pocky' is only down the 1079.

Thanks for the update in the interest of similarity.

Mine has no filter, so yes, richer. but as per Mercury.  Did John Hudson note any plug bother?

I might save you a few bob on plugs yet.  Nice bike all the same.

BTW, 2-1 Exhaust for me & Castrol Straight 40. Boyer as you know.

930 set up (Mercury) from Fecked.  No complaints.

All the best,

Neil.

28  BTDC seems very safe sided.  Book number is 32.  Book for 88SS is 31, and that works fine for my bike.  Usually with E5 fuel.

Hi Phil, Neil and David

That's a great brochure.

Wonder if someone with original colour 1960's sales brochures could

run some colour photocopies off for us to buy? Including postage.

Yes I see what you mean about the timing at 28 deg BTDC.

My 650SS has a decompression plate under the barells and yet still accelerates well on "tall" gearing and low-octane modern petrol, two - up.

Went back through my notes from 6 / 7 years ago and found the same difference of opinion from various people at the time: 28 deg to 32 deg. BTDC. I did check the timing on both cylinders.

It's a pain if you have to keep trying different settings.

I guess if it starts well ( 1 to 3 kicks after ? months off-road), ticks over strongly and doesn't

overheat, it must be somewhere near right. And 60 mpg seams respectable.

Tim
