Shock Absorber Upper mount

Forums

I've found a few posts on upper shock absorber mountings but nothing similar to my issue

I'm trying to fit a new set of Shocks (From NoC shop) to my slimline 99 but the upper bush will not fit in the frame channel

The shock bush lengths are 28.6 & 28.7mm but the frame channel is only 26.2 & 26.9mm

From the threads I've read, the shock bush length looks to be correct so I assume the frame channel gap has been closed by some previous over-zealous torquing?

I could grind the bushes down (though don't really like the idea) but has anyone had an similar issue and found a way of successfully opening out the frame channel?

Cheers for any advice

Paul

I had the opposite, I've just fitted a pair of shocks from Andover Norton to the '63 slimline frame of my 650SS. The shocks came with two sets of bushes for the top mount, a shorter set and a longer set. Unfortunately, the longer set were still not long enough and I had to pack the top mount with TWO stainless steel washers EACH SIDE of the tube to take up all the sideways play. There was no sign of any distortion to the frame mounting. Were there different width mountings on the slimline frame or did Andover Norton just get it wrong??

Not an answer to your post John but maybe something to add more confusion

I followed Barry's tip above and managed to get my shock absorbers installed only to find the new upper bolts supplied by Andover Norton are too short, they only thread about halfway into the nut

It does seem there is either some variances in dimensions on slimline frames or indeed maybe Andover Norton is a bit confused...

Just as a follow up I've had an e-mail exchange with Ashley the tech support at Andover and he has checked the bolt specification against the Norton drawings and done a parts stack up dimensional check and the bolt specified on the original Norton drawings is actually too short.

He admits this isn't the first error he has found on original Norton drawings, he also refers to the shock upper bush mentioned by John above,

He seems a very helpful guy and as one positive thing to come out of this he says he will instigate a review of all slimline parts to check for any other errors
