Sharing experiences of replica parts.

Hi all,

Sometimes come in a discussion how replica parts fits as replacement in our old bikes.

Among many considerations, two are of importance: Quality and if it fits correctly.

I bought recently from India a rear number plate, because I couldn?t find it in eBay.

Also yesterday, I received a set of throttle and handlebar rubbers for my 18, 1947, being a very good replica of the Doherty ones, at least by the rubbers. Don?t know by the throttle body, because mine seems not to be original.

As shown in the attached photograph, appearance and quality of the rubbers are satisfactory, as well as the throttle. I only replaced the clamp screws by modifying M6 slotted screws, also shown in the picture.

the middle rubber in the picture is the replica, and the left one is the original NOS Doherty bought recently from "happyguineapig".

The aim of this post is to share about price , quality and fitting of parts to replace, and of course, the source of them.

Any additional suggestion?

I would wait a year before saying the rubber is good quality, fork gaitors turning into rings within 12 months is common.

Rubber apart, my experience has been that there are some extremely well made metal work parts available, particularly in stainless steel.

We are fortunate that there are still some excellent enthusiastic engineers in the UK who have turned their hand to this market.

If it were not for the demand for stainless steel replacements there would be a total unavailability of accurately made new parts for these ancient machines.

I don?t know how long will last the rubber in good condition, but comparing it with the Doherty one, it is stronger and thicker, and well finished.

The throttle body is of cast metal, also fairly finished with only little cast imperfections.

If of interest, the seller is rsvintageparts2014, and the set costs was GBP 7 plus 4.1 for shipping to Chile.

I have found that parts on offer from E-bay suppliers (which are not of uk manufacture) can be completely useless due to the maker having little or no understanding of the intended use. This is a bit alarming as totally unexpected problems can arise .wrong grade of steel can give safety issues etc. The other aspect is that some suppliers clearly know the product is no use but feel it is their right to offload to us knowing that by the time we get round to fitting it may be too late to get a refund. Even when returned within time they can block refunds by lying about receipt of returned item. Name and shame them. ?.
