Roadholder fork gaskets & oil

Forums

I refitted the forks on my bike and they don't leak anymore and seem to work ok but the L/H shroud has started coming loose. I guess I didn't check if the three screws holding it on were tight! That means I'll have to remove it all again so I can get to the screws and tighten them up.

In the meantime, I have a few questios as the Haynes manual diagram is a vit vague:

1. I see on the NOCshop that there's a leather washer for Roadholder forks, What's the leather washer for? Should I have them on my bike's forks (Atlas) and if so, where do they go?

2. What's the paper gasket for and where does it go? I didn't see any paper gasket when disassembling the forks.

3. I filled the forks with 130ml of 20W oil, which I now believe isn't enough. They do seem to drop a bit when the bike comes off the stand but they seem to work ok out on the road. What's the right amount. Is it 142 or 150 or what?

p.s. I didn't have a problem refilling the forks with oil. It all went in fairly easily and didn't take ages to go in either.

The leather washers are used on forks with external springs (normally the “long” road holders) fitted each end of the spring. The paper washers go between the seal and the lock ring (I’ve never bothered with them). The quantity of oil won’t make any difference to the amount the forks drop when taken off the stand, the oil is just for damping (and lubrication), the the spring strength and preload control the drop. It should normally drop a couple of inches.

Graham,

You may find that the loose fork shroud has three tight securing screws but a past accident has broken the small welds at the top of the cover.

Weld between tube and fixing plate with three holes.

Hope it's just loose screws.

Those screws are a Bug--ger  to do.  A carefully sized long screwdriver and another pair of hands with mirror and led  torch works.

So, I removed the L/H fork stanchion and tightened up the three shroud screws. One of them had dropped out, fortunately into the oil seal holder cup, so it was easy to hoik out and fit back. Wasn't too difficult to do and there was no splitting or damage thankfully. Like Rob said, use a mirror and light and a long screwdriver. Managed to do it solo.

I also added another 20ml of fork oil so there's 150ml in each leg now. Can't quite understand how other people have had difficulty filling the forks. It seemed to pour in quite easily for me.
