Removing the Mag

removing the bottom nut on the 650SS is a problem.  Unless someone makes a special spanner I am going to have to cut up one of mine. Could drill out the stud from the timing side !.

Hi Bob -  I use an bi-hex ring spanner from Elora ( old West German brand ). I ground down the outer a little to give easy access ( I say that jestingly)  then cut off the other end of the shank.  My bikes have always had the reduced hex 5/16 inch Cycle nuts so a 3/16 inch Whit spanner is good.  By fiddling the spanner on the nut then pressing up on the shank they will come undone. Of course removing the spanner and turning it over is often required.  Eventually careful use of the thumb and middle finger will get it clear of the stud.  Don't let it beat you.  I once saw John Hudson remove one in minutes but it takes me a bit longer.  Once removed fit a Bsa extended nut !!   Cheers, H

Hi Howard . I recall that an earlier bike had the nut on the inside of the timing case. Not ideal. I am just going to have to cut up a spanner and get grinding ..  Have been told  easier if you remove whole of primary side first  and tip the box back !.   I 'll bet JH had a special tool.I have already removed oil filter pipes , drain tap and junction block.  But still struggling .

Bob...I have a special spanner...open ended with sides ground back to points. Reverse its sides each time you take another 'bite'.  It helps if the threads are clean so it doesn't jam, and spins off with finger tips as soon as it is slack.
My long BSA bolt won't fit unless I grind something off the crankcase flanges.  It's still in a box somewhere

A visit to the local autojumble should turn up a suitable spanner (a combination ring spanner) to modify for around £1 if you good at haggling. Look in the boxes of rusty junk that people always take to autojumbles. Get the shank of the spanner red hot and bend it to a suitable curve. You're essentially making your own obstruction spanner.

The Velocette Owners Club shop has the strange magneto bottom nut spanner. When you put the mag back on, make sure you use a BSA twin extended nut. It makes life so much easier. I was able to do a mag swap including timing in an hour last week.
