Question is; what are others using for the long rod, washers and nuts for compressing the springs when refitting the springs and covers to the frame.
I dismantled easily using 6mm threaded rod (from B&Q or Toolstation) and suitable nuts and 25mm diameter steel washers. The trouble I am having when reassembling with the same is I get a washer left trapped at the bottom as the washers are bigger than the hole in the frame and will not pass through. Using a smaller washer is very likely to damage the end covers.

Thanks for the helpful reply. For father's day my son came home to help me and with 2 pairs of hands we managed to get both sides reassembled using the long threaded rod, nuts and washers the manual recommends and I used to dismantle them. A relief!

I used a sash clamp to wind it down. That way you can slide to clamp off as you slide the assembly into the frame. There's nothing to stop it sliding out at the wrong time and flying everywhere though so be careful. I found that the easiest way of getting them both in and out.
