Thanks

Hi Mark,

If possible look inside the piston from underneath and the manufacturers usually have their initials or logo cast on somewhere. It will be something like H&G, Hepworth, Heplex, AE etc. Another Norton quirk, if you have an original piston, is the thickness of the compression rings. Most other manufacturers used 1/16th (.0625") but Norton used .060" so you may want to check your new ones against the ones in the piston. Another thing to check is the radial depth (width) of the new rings.

Regards, Richard.

Hi Mark

My 38 ES2 had this number on top of mine 796-11 OT (Std)

Underneath just showed another number something like 796-96

No manufacture stamp at all.

I had Cox & Turner make me a new set of rings.

The 1/8th oil ring usually is for 16h pistons and the 5/32nd for the ES2. The compression rings are the same for both as far as I remember.

Have you got a 16h piston fitted?

Paul
