Raising handlebars on 1959 Model 50.

Forums

The straight handlbars on my bike are so low that the clutch and front brake cable routing is interfered with by the tops of the telescopic forks. In this position, after time, the outer casings of the cables get damaged. Does anyone know where I can buy some 'raiser blocks' with longer bolts to accommodate ? It really only needs to lift the bars up by 1/2" from where they are now.

I assume these straight bars are non standard as I can't imagine anyone would have designed the bike with this cable interference. However, I would like to stick with these bars rather than buying the more elevated type to solve the problem.

I bought these and was satisfied: https://bykebitz.co.uk/touring/motorcycle-handlebars/motorcycle-handlebar-risers/bike-it-adjustable-handlebar-risers.html

Also available in black; either way, you will acquire a selection of metric Allen bolts of various lengths; for longer imperial items, try

I assume they'll have ordinary bolts if you fined Allen bolts anachronistic.

If it's the same as 1955 it will be 5/16 cycle thread. I think it extremely unlikely that they were Allen bolts. My ES2 has reduced head bolts.

My 59 built 99 and the 67 Atlas both have allen bolts holding the bars which was a std fitment though I would not be surprised to find different threads on the Atlas . The 99dl Built 59 was also one of the first bikes I owned to fit posidrive screws, but only to the enclosed rear chaincase. Allen type screws were also in use to hold the alternator housing and distributor housing, though I never found anything to fit those!. Norton was moving with the times!.

I have found that the "750 Commando" bend available through various suppliers is a great bar across the board- I have the bend fitted to my 650SS, 57 ES2, Model 7, plus my 3 Commando's, every body I have suggested them to has loved them though I reduce the width by 3" per side.
