Oil in laydown gearbox

Forums

Does anyone know roughly how much oil these boxes should take? I tried filling it up through the inspection cover and the book says you should fill it to the level plug, but the oil is coming back out the cover but nothing coming out the level plug. Its as if the oil isn't getting through the inner cover.

Am I missing something really obvious?

In other news, my imacualtely restored ES2 is p***ing petrol out the carb and wont start, bitmore to do after work tomorrow, but its real close now!

Thanks in advance

Andy, I don't have a laydown box so I'll make that clear first BUT what I find with the AMC boxes and my Doll's head boxis that you should not try to put the oil in all at once, especially gear oil like I use. (Castrol EP90 in AMC and 140 in Doll's head) You will get an air lock and find you can't get any more in. Put a bit in then leave it a few minutes before putting in some more and keep doing that until it starts to trickle out of the level plug.

As for the carb. First thing to do is to drain it and make sure the filter is clear of debris. Then check the float to see if it's a victim of Ethanol. I'm assuming you are using a monoblock? I'm just about to buy my first monoblock for the original 99 I'm restoring and so others might have other tips to offer. Got a pre monoblock on my 16h but all the others are Mk 1's and the cure of this problem was the same as stated but as said, others may have more knowledge and experience.

The forum is a collective of riders experiences, they are not all the same, Amen for that. I for one like to hearhow other Norton riders cure a problem and often there is more than one way. Your choice.....

PS: Especially with contaminated petrol (EN228) we have to endure, my best tip for when you get your Norton running again is to turn off the petrol and run it until it stops so there is nothing left into attack your pipes and carb bits, inc alloy. My granddad used to turn off the petrol 1/4 mile from home and even coast in if the engine cut out before getting home! He never had any bother.

Hello Andy, firstly, you are going about the task the wrong way!.... If the box is dry, leave the level plug in and putapproximately1/2 pint of oil in. This is the manufacturers recommended quantity....Tilting the machine over to the leftwill make this a little easier. ..The LEVEL plug is to be used when you are only topping up the box during maintenanceand you aren't sure of how much oil is requiredto be putback in to bring the level up for safe running.

Re your flooding carburettor, from memory, you should have a type 76 carb fitted. They are prone to getdirt under the float needle, holding it open. Also, check that the tickler on float chamber cap isn't touching float top, also holding it open, and also make sure the float clip is correctly in the needle groove. Did you lap the needle with brasso in it's seat?Unscrew the chamber cover and turn on the petrol, watch the float rise and when it starts to overflow, twist the needle end with your fingers and pull up, this should be enough to dislodge any dirt on seat.

If I were writing this from U.S.A., I would have to put in a reminder clauseabout NOT smoking while near petrol (gasoline) fumes, but we all know better this way!wink

When refilling my 63 Dommie box I found that putting the correct qty of oil in gave a level rather above the drain plug. Also it cured a sticky gear selection especially from 2nd to first. And yes, the bike was on its centre stand and level.
