Hello after under going an extensive clean and a number of new parts I thought I was almost there to start and finally hear my dads 1948 Norton ES2 going again. But it wasn't to be. Im now stuck as what to do and how to get her going again. Does anyone know of a good mobile mechanic who could come to the house and fix the problem? Does anyone know how much something like this would cost. Or is anyone able to come and help. I would pay for your time and travel.
I also don't know the correct procedure for starting the bike either. My father left me the bike in his will and I really want to full his dream of getting it going.
thank you for any hell you might be able to offer

JonathanThere are several…
JonathanThere are several NOC members of Surrey branch not far away from you. Why not turn up to the monthly meeting (Stepping Stones, West Humble) this Wednesday? Also there is a shiny car+bike show at Warlingham Rugby Club next Sunday and several NOC members should be there. I'm sure someone can be persuaded to have a look since it isn't far away. You might introduce yourself and have a practice start.I'm a bit busy today (SW18)RegardsDavid

The next Wednesday meeting…
The next Wednesday meeting at the Stepping Stones will only be for a meeting point as the Surrey section is going onto a BBQ that has been arranged by Guilford Tyres and a talk by the ex Norton racer Terry Rymer. This you can attend if you want, as our chairman can send you a notification foryou to attend. If you go to our branch web site you can contact our chairman Steven Eccleshall and Geoff Coleour treasurer. We have many of our branch members that have a very extensive knowledge about the singles, from the 1920's through to the 1960's. We also meet the second Wednesday of the month, and we have just had a stand at the Brooklands Motorcycle show on 3rd July. Where about are you in Croydon, as we do have some members in that area.

Hello thank you so much fo…
Hello thank you so much for the replies to my message. It's very difficult for me to make the Wednesday meetings as I actually live in north west London. But the bike is at my parents in Croydon. We are in Addiscombe which is a short distance from East Croydon train station. Would you suggest trying to message the chairman to see if anyone could help. I would be so grateful for anyone's help.
The project was started to try and restore my dads bike as he had termal cancer. And I tried my best to complete the project but unfortunately I couldn't do it before my dad pasted away 3 months ago. But I so want to complete the project and get running again. So any help/advice/pointer in the right direction I would be eternally grateful!
thank you

I too had trouble starting…
I too had trouble starting my ES2 until I realised that the trick (having retarded the ignition, closed the choke lever and given it one very quick tickle) was to KEEP THE THROTTLE SHUT). Instinctively we tend to give it a blip as we kick it over. DON'T! It may well start on a very low tick-over but you can then catch it with a bit of throttle once it's fired. Let us all know how you get on. George

If you haven't got it goi…
If you haven't got it going by Sunday afternoon, mail again and one of us should be able to come round after the Warlingham show if you like.If the timing is correct and the carb is clean - and there is a spark from the mag (is there?), hopefully it's mostly a matter of getting the settings right. George makes a good point - not too much throttle to start with. Also, if it 'catches', advance the ignition quite quickly but gently open the throttle. The Amal has no accelerator pump to enrich the mixture if you open it fast; so it can die if you 'blip' the throttle too fast on a cold engine.David

There are three members of the Surrey branch that live not too far from where yourbike is located. If you can turn up at the WRC event on the 17th July we should be able to help you with your Norton. You also need to buy your self a hand book and a manual as this should also help you with all the engine settings to help with getting it started. A hand book and a workshop manuala re very important items for the restoration and repair of your bike.

Hi guys thank you so much…
Hi guys thank you so much for all the advice. The mag has been refurbished with a new slip ring and armeture, new by lead and spark plug. The head has been skimmed and new seat valves and guides. The carb has been fully cleaned and all new washers. Although I did notice that it was leaking petrol from the air intake I'm not sure if this is normal. I also set the timing with the head off the bike. So by the sounds of things it's all down the startup procedure. I'm heading back to Croydon tomorrow to give it another try. I will let you know how I get on.
I have attached a pic

Today's ethanol fuels go off quickly so use fresh fuel and go for super unleaded if available as this has a chance to be ethanol free.
