Barry, I guess you looked under Technical section on this site and the Library. I have a 30M long stroke manual but I guess your lighthouse shorty for 56. Is it general information or specific to Engine? Rolling chassis would fall pretty much in line with an 88 of the year though hubs and some other material specs would change.

If I spot anything on my shelves I'll come back to you.

Thanks for the response and the information, I haven't yet checked the library or technical information as I'm new to membership but I will check. What I was told when I bought the bike is that it's an International 40 bottom end with manx piston and top end, front wheel is Grimica 4 leading shoe rear original, TTI 5 speed gearbox with kick-start (joke), obviously featherbed frame but with Reynolds tubing.

Someone has tinkered and not well but I'm putting obvious things right as I go

Many thanks for all the advice and sorry for not replying earlier, I work abroad and often do not have access (or time) to check the site.

I have looked at the tuning notes etc. on the site, the information is helpful but assumes that the bike is fully sorted and standard. I will take some photographs as it is when I get back to the UK and attempt to post them.

The manual on ebay appears to be up to 1949 whereas my bike is 1956 so not sure if it would be applicable

I may attempt to start the bike this weekend although the procedure is not clear regarding the timing advance lever, operate the lever or leave it alone??

I restore classic cars as a hobby and have had many motorbikes in the past, I decided to restore the Norton (and a BSA B31) for a bit of a change.

There are only four or five documents ever produced that talk about the later Manx specifically, and none of them tell you how to disassemble and rebuild the cam box which is the most tricky bit. They are not manuals. Most of them pick up on a few tuning ideas and specify clearances, etc.

If you have rebuilt other engines a few times, and perhaps a Norton single, then most of the Manx is common sense. It is a case of get started, ask when stuck, and build up your own file of specifications and details.

Thanks Norm, I will speak to Barry when I'm back in the UK, I have looked at several documents/manuals but so far have not discovered a good guide to what I have. I have rebuilt many engines and gearboxes, never a Norton single but Matchless singles all the way through to a Jaguar V12. Best bet seems to be to get stuck in an make notes, sketches, photograph as I go. Even obtaining information from TTI on the installed gearbox is between difficult and impossible.

OK interesting; I had a similar machine only the chassis was 1956 350 Manx rolling with 1938 Big head ally inter engine.

So an 88 manual is a good way to go for the chassis and any Long Stroke Model 30 maint instruction will do. I will look to see if I have a copy. Obviously the Grimeca and other foreign items will need their own specialist info.. It will be over the weekend as i am away this week. If you post a picture be good to see. (no mean feat for some of us.....) Do it one pic at a time (Shrunk to doc size or less....)or the site gets a bit screwy... Then talk about the areas you are attacking, Im sure someone will chip in with advise. Lets see what we can do to help. Where are you located?
