Lightweight Main Bearings

Forums

Hi all,

I note the NOC shop is out of stock for Lightweight Main Bearings and Norvil doesn't seem to stock them although I am going to phone tomorrow.   Does anyone know where they can be sourced (with the correct chamfer) other than perhaps Russell Motors in London?

Cheers

Hi Nick,

Try speaking to Neil Shoosmith of NOC spares. He may well have some bearings being ground with the larger radius on inner race. Not a lengthy process.

The Dominator ball and roller mains are readily available. Grinding 1/8 ins rad (3.2/3.5 mm) on one inner shoulder (preferably the side without part marking)  makes lightweight main bearings. Not a task for most home mechanics but a local engineer could do it for you. Don't accept any assurances that all grit has been kept out of the bearing. Spin them around in clean petrol or paraffin before assembly.

Hope you find some new bearings.

Hi Peter,

Thank you so much, that is really helpful, I will email him tomorrow after I have checked with Norvil.    Cheers. Nick

Nicholas, if you have a lathe or know some one with one then turning the radius is possible using "tipped" (carbide) tools.

Rather than a radius, I think a suitable chamfer would do.

I've just done this for my lightweight with a modified main bearing arrangement.  More about that later when I know if its been successful..........

Hi again Peter and John,

Thanks for the feed back, luckily a phone call to Norvil using the original Norton part numbers (20726 and 20727) proved that they have them in stock so I have ordered them.   Rest assured I will be doing a careful comparison with the originals before I fit them!   I will report back once the have arrived and I have checked they are correctly ground!

Tip top!   Nick

Hi Peter,

You may have seen my post about Norvil's drive side main bearing which is a very different design to gthe original and also seems to be of lower quality so I am minded not to use it but return it.  I have trawled the club website but can't find Neil Shoosmith's contact details.  Can you point me in the right direction?

If I have no joy there I think I will take your advice and buy a Dommie roller main and get it ground as you suggest.   Nothing is ever simple, I am having to get a local specialist engineering company to remove the timing side pinion - I have gone through four sets of the correct puller jaws and used serious heat and it just wont budge!!!

Cheers   Nick
