Laydown gearbox on '62 Model 50

I am looking at buying a 1962 reg Model 50 Featherbed single. However it has the 'laydown' gearbox which I believe is incorrect and probably not as good as the AMC.

Can anyone shed any light on this? Should it be avoided?

Laydown boxes were used up to 1956/57 and AMC boxes 57 on. If yours is a 62 slimline model or even a 61 build, even a 59 / 60 wideline it would have had an AMC box.

Do the frame and engine numbers match? If they don't, it may be a bike put together from what was available. That does not mean it should be avoided if the price is right and that depends on a lot of other things as you can expect.

The model 50 is a very reliable motor as long as you are not in a hurry to go anywhere and excellent on fuel economy. I'm not aware of any big issues with the lay down box and AMC boxes are available, you can even buy a new one if your pockets are deep enough.

A few pictures would be good and a sound file if you want an estimated realistic valuation though.

Most certainly not an AMC box. Very clean installation. Have you checked the factory records to see if it might have been supplied as a "special"?

Also, it looks like you have a check valve installed in the supply line from the oil tank. Has it given you any troubles? What is the make?

I am looking at the bike tomorrow! Obviously not original as the frame is red and a few other non standard fittings.

Are the 'Laydown' and AMC boxes interchangeable?

Thanks for all your replies - it's a great club!

Yes you can swap them over but you'll need different plates as the mountings are different. But there's nothing wrong with a Laydown box. When looking for an AMC box check the numbers, Norton boxes have a number beginning with an N or an NA I think, Matchless and AJS boxes which are identical inside but have different mountings are usually prefixed with a M

Thanks for all your help. I did not buy the bike with laydown box. Found another in nice condition and did a deal. Black and cream! I'll post pics is due course.
