Lay Down Gear Box

Forums

Can anyone help? I am trying to locate a Kickstart and gear lever for a Lay down gear box for my Model 7

Also I am looking for a Eureka oil pressure gauge (160psi) for the same model.

Many thanks

David.

Hi David. The gear lever I believe is the same as the Matchless G3L. You will have to reduce the pedal end to fit a rubber and kink it slightly to clear the timing cover. It does not come painted as its Army and the large foot pedal is for army boots. You can ask the Matchless owners club for sizes as I believe they sell new ones.

Kickstart lever is standard Dommie size.

Until 1956, the Matchless bikes used Burman gearboxes, and afterwards, the AMC box. Neither box has a gearlever spline common to the Norton laydown box

If you are after a non-folding kickstart lever, there are various bend profiles used on singles and early twins. Take care to get a suitable bend.Paul

Hi Paul. The laydown box is a Burman box and the Matchless G3L WD gearlever has the correct splines. As previously stated it has to be fettled to fit.

At the moment I cannot finda G3L leverbut my Matchless/Ariel expert is looking for an Ariel one for me. It is longer but the splines are the same. How much longer I do not know but suspect it can be fettled.

Hi David. Please see commentsabove for a gearlever. If you want one let me know and I will try to source an Ariel one.

Hi,

One of our French Branch members is restoring a Model 7 and asked me for the nearest paint colour (I presume he means the Grey one) available.

any suggestions ?

Hi Geoff

It is difficult to say whether it was grey or silver on a black and white 1953 photograph of my father on his Model 7.

French importer Garreau had leaflets printed in black and white for a long time until Mercuries and Atlas came out.

As the petrol tank was chromed, the color of the paint was not really a problem. The red line and Norton logo were handpainted.

I saw the tank painted in silver then black, then silver again.

Now I sent the tank to Lewis Templeton to remobe dents, rechrome and paint it as it should be. Let see how it comes.

In addition, I am restoring my own 88 twin (1953)
