International fuel tank mounting hole distances

Forums

G'day All,

I would like to get a International fuel tank to fit a rigid diamond frame I have. I'm collecting pieces for a Model 18 racer bitsa I would like to piece together. I have seen a couple come up for sale lately stating they would fit both rigid and plunger frames for models 18, ES2, CS1, International. They have the holes that go right through tank from top to bottom. Both tanks had the mounting hole centres at 15 1/2" x 8". I have a 1938 ES2 with the rigid cradle frame (supposedly the same frame as an International) and also a wartime diamond frame (basically same as prewar) which I'm planning on making the bitsa out of which is what I would like one of these tanks for. However, the mounting holes on both frames are 14" x 5 1/2". So which frames were these tanks advertised really for ? Maybe this these tanks were to sit on modified mounting points on the dedicated Norton racers ?

Hi Glenn.

This might answer your question - http://s261735181.e-shop.info/shop/catalog/browse?sessid=ZoFCIRalAw1tx5seRGJkYGsfpCnZknxgatyxfiWMt9Fz3n65AjLMgvCXS5u171Gt&shop_param=shop_overview_pager%3D2%26cid%3D50%26

Although this might take care of the front I'm not sure about the rear as the Manx had a different support than the ES2 and Inter and I don't think anyone makes them. It was a casting on the Manx as opposed to a stamped and bent piece of metal on the Inter. I don't think it would be to hard to make something up and it would be mostly hidden by the tank unlike the front mounting. I have a plunger Manx so if you want any measurements let me know.

Regards,

Ian.

Thanks for that Ian. I contacted one of the sellers to see if he knew what the deal was and this is what he came back with;

" The ES2 frame and International frame are not the same, firstly the Inter frame is much taller, as an example if you were to measure the front down tube starting from the bottom where the tube entres the cradle casting to the bottom steering head race its about 22", where a ES2 frame would be around 19"about 10 years ago I fitted a International engine to an ES2 Rigid frame and we found that the 350 engine would just fit and the 500 had no chance.so I was lucky enough to borrow a Inter frame and when there side by side they are nothing alike. including Foot peg brackets,also the tank mounting lugs are roughly the same as this tank, saying that there can be ever so slight variation's between tanks,Internationals have Alloy tank brackets that bolt to the frame and then the Tank bolts to the bracket, perhaps this could be an option for you as your main concern I would think is the depth of the tank for the frame you have and weather it sits too high or not. "

There goes my theory about ES2 and Inter frames being the same. I reckon if I managed to get hold of one of these tanks I should be able to make it fit with a bit of fabrication work. Should be able to knock up some bridges like the ones in the link you provided. Here is a link to a youtube video with a model 18 diamond frame with a similar tank. I hope one day mine will end up looking that good.
