Ignition warning light Assimilator Unit

Forums

1977 MKIII Commando. New ignition warning light, with full volts going in but only approx 6.5V to earth through brown/white cable and no illumination. Connect light direct to earth and bingo, lights up. According to manual Ass. Unit is suspect. Any advice before I buy a new solid state from RGM, oh and by the way , where is it located.

I'm not an expert on your model Commando (I have a 1972 750 Roadster) but according to the parts diagram the warning light control unit (06-6393) for an 850 Mk 3e is situated under the seat in the area of of the battery - see diagram part number 29 on page 69 of this link http://britmoto.com/manuals/Manuals/8503e_pt.pdf

This is different from earlier models which had the warning light assimilator situated with the coils etc under the fuel tank.

Suggest it would be worth speaking to Al Osborn who is the club expert on matters electrical for a replacement - http://aoservices.co.uk/

Hope this helps

The original Norton Commando 'tin' box (same size as a 35mm film can) was renowned for failing, causing the non charging fault and even a new batch from Lucas were mostly faulty. Tin box under the tank-bin it.The MkIII had a black plastic flat box under the battery with 5 terminals this was ok for a while. Both of these devices have been re manufactured by Nortons and are 'ok' BUT the regulator/rectifiers a la Boyer Power box do not like one alternator wire going to earth as a fault which can happen with this style of warning light assimlator. (new or old). But A O Services (and Paul Goff) sell a small-square block with three wires called a charge indicator or Low voltage Warning device, this item looks at the battery voltage and detects when it rises (lamp out) and falls (lamps on). We also sell a BSM which is a 10mm Led that changes colour with the rising voltage on your battery. Red ignition on, Green charging, Flashing Red-trouble ie more information. So there.AO
