Ignition cut out

Forums

Can anybody tell me the location, suitable type for, an ignition cut out switch on a 1967 650ss (magneto). At present I am using a toggle switch in the main beam indicator hole in the headlamp shell. Thanks, Alan. (I would like it to look original!)

hell my switch is at side of the seat. it as a rubber cover over it. I may have a spare one. and then there is a button on the right side handle bar to so .you can stop in a emergence or switch off the mag by the switch at the side of the seat. its not a standard fitting . its what I have fitted as I think its the best way off using a cutout switch . for the magneto. if someone tryed to start the bike when I am not there they cannot. as the switch will be on for the cutout. and being touched under the left handside of the seat you can not see it. you have to bend well down to get to see the switch . i am looking for a small barrel switch with keys. and then fit a small alarm system that when anyone try's tampering with the bike it. will go off and its says in a deep voice . stand back this bike is now armed . that will surprise them. yours anna j

The standard cut out is a 'push to make' chrome plated button on the handlebars to earth the mag centre brush.

The usual deal is to use a horn button. These are widely available from British bike parts merchants.

All the stuff here about security using the mag cut out is basically pony, since any one wanting to ride away on a magneto bike only has to remove or cut the wire to the magneto cut out to start the engine.

A better way to stop your bike from being stolen is to lock it to a lamp post or some other unmovable object with a hefty chain around the frame.

I'm with Colin on that type of security! Or chain it to a very large and ferocious dog if there's one handy!

I parked my Domi in Dundee and came back 15 mins later to find my brand new and rather expensive padlock and chain missing. When mentioned later to the vehicle crime officer he did point out that I had returned moments before the bike disappeared as well. A bit of a close shave, but clearly the time taken to remove the padlock and chain was just long enough to allow me to wander innocently back. Phew.

It might be worthwhile investigating how to switch the mag output through the handlebars as a theft deterrent. You'd need a condutor strip in at least one of the handlebar grips though. I remember cleaning the commutator of a K2F for the first time and just turning it over slowly by hand with a meths rag against it! What a belt! No, I wasn't standing in water &probably had rubber soles!

Stolen bikes of any variety disappear into the back of a van. They rarely get started.
