Ignition coil(s) for 99

Forums

My 1961 99 Dominator with Boyer ignition has become a pig to start despite fresh petrol, new plugsand with a freshly charged battery at over 13V. Tickover is good with new concentric carb. I think the sparks are weak and am contemplating renewing the plug leads and coils. Good starting is my priority rather than top performance. Any suggestions as to the best coil (dual?) or coils to get to achieve this? Any weaknesses with the Boyer system that might need replacement after a few years?

Thanks. Nigel Orchard

Nigel-I found out the hard way that the best coil/s for Boyer are the ones that Boyer supply. Depending on which box you have you may need or not suppressor caps. I use the twin output coil with the heat sinkkit.Ring Boyer on 01622 730939 they will help you. Ron

I have found that Accel coils, the sort which look like ones for Harley-Davidsons work well with Boyers. They are available with the correct resistance. You just use one coil, which has two outputs for plug leads.

Hi Nigel,

My Dommi of 1960 vintage is fitted with a 20 year old Boyer system and uses 2....6 volt coils assupplied by the outfit in Cannock, and so far I`ve no reason to change, because it`s been totally fine.

Happy trails,

Alan H.

The coils are NOT critical. If there is an issue starting then you need to investigate that specific problem. The problem might be a bit subtle but not coils or petrol. Dirty plugs is easy to overlook, ie oiled or mixture sooted up.

Although this story doesn't help-this is what we did a while back. Commando engine, stood, not run for 23 yrs. Fresh barrels and pistons fitted, head removed and bead blasted only. Refitted. Ignition timing and bottom end untouched. 850 carbs (750 engine) rebuilt out of good spares. original 23 yr old Boyer and coils. Petrol out of Reliant that stood for 6 months with no engine! only electrics-car battery on the floor to feed ignition. Started first kick. So what are you boys doing? Good spark, close carburation, compression and away it goes. Assuming you haven't messed with timing etc. A previously running engine should not be any issue to start. He says with authority!
