Fitting sat nav

Just fit a waterproof car/boat power supply like this one - wire it directly to the battery and you dont have to worry about the polarity of the earth, you could wire it to the ignition switch if you want it switched. The socket canbe hidden or mouted somewhere convenient. I'd then mount the sat nav to the bars. Thats what I do with my trail bikes.

Several owners, including me, have got SatNavs working on their Classic positive earth bikes. The trick is to make sure the power source is the correct polarity. For my bikes....I rewired a cigarette type socket so that the power lead comes straight from the battery via clips and a fuse. Some owners have wired their SatNavs units into the ignition switch. This is not so easy on a magneto powered Dommie.

The advantage of what you see is......it will fit and run on either my negative earth modern bike or my positive earth Nortons. I can just unplug the socket and pocket the system for safety. I can mount the display on the handle bar for a visual directions but......usually I pop the preplanned display unit into my pocket and listen to directions through the earpieces. I prefer this as I am not distracted, visually, while riding and can look out for signs, turnings and other motorists.

That was just an example, but yes red for + black for -. Dont forget a fuse on the red wire.

Hi all, I tried in the past to fit a sat nav to my commando, trashed it!! Is it possible to fit a negative earth sat nav to a commando, if so has anyone got an idiots guide on how to do it please, cheers Tone.

well if you look on disco equipment or pro sound equipment you find a plug socket called a XLR Male and Female Socket and these are water prof too you have in side them a Hot side witch is positive + and a cold side Negative - and the its a earth side as well if you need it, and these plugs will not pull out ether you have to push down on a button at the side of the fitting and they do panel fitting ones too ,so from there you can take your two wire from the battery to the panel XLR fitting then a cable to the SAT-NAV a direct feed from the battery . yours anna j

This way I can charge my phone or use the Car SatNav whilst on the road. I just connect directly to the batterywith an inline fuse, remove or store lead in battery compartment when not in use.

To be honest, I can't see much when it's in the tank bag screen needs shading, Icobbled sound from an old intercom (yes, it's pretty crap), I prefer to use maps (or VIa Michelin),Garmin great tho' for finding your hotel in town(turn volumeup to max and entertain thelocals)

Search for last year's thread on this site (April or May 2013) which will answer most of your questions - now I know I am not the only person confused by electrickery!
