Finding Neutral

Forums

Finding neutral has always been an issue with the 99, all the more annoying as the Atlas has always been good . Replaced and fettled just about everything but the only thing that made a difference was grinding off about 20thou from the back face of the clutch spider which was showing signs of heavy contact with the sleeve gear. I don't really understand the theory here and would welcome others thoughts. I have noticed that the internal register of the spider is not well designed and have seen much better ones on sale .Its possible that a properly tightened clutch nut is too much for the existing fitting.

I bought a new spider from RGM, PITA to fit the rubbers but seems to have sorted my gear selection issues ( and clutch rubbing on the inner chain case) but I did need to change the engine sprocket to one with a different offset to keep everything in line.

Hi Dan, was that one of the full price ones or slight rejects ?. what did you think was wrong with the old one?. Were the rubbers from RGM the correct shape? ,the set I fitted were not.(don't remember where bought).Sounds like the old spider was migrating up the shaft (like mine). Looking at the registers inside the spider some are a full circle, some are really skimpy, need to get to the bottom of this. I think the neutral issues are because although the mainshaft is not revolving it can still be loaded up by the spider and put pressure on the gears /shafts which inhibits the selector action.

It was full price about £80 I think, cheaper than Andover! I got the rubbers from RGM too. They fitted but it was hard without a spare mainshaft!

My original splines had lost the lip and were sliding up the shaft.

My clutch was also fitting too far up the splines and was rubbing on the inner chaincase. I ordered a new spider from NOCShop which seemed correct although it had voids in the metal in some stressed places. I am considering repairing the original spider with a hardened washer against the splines to restore the alignment. It will go in my spare clutch. The good thing is I can align the chain perfectly with the right thickness washer.
