I recall that the early 50's ES2 I had as a youngster had the most wonderful exhaust sound. When changing down - a tad too early - and letting the rear wheel drive the engine on the over-run, it seemed to suck the whole of the universe back up the exhaust pipe. The sound was amazing. Was it a function of slightly delayed exhaust valve timing, too few (if any) baffles in the silencer, or what. I have a yen to emulate it! perhaps a long drill up the silencer? George

I like your description George. My '49 ES2 sounds glorious, people comment on how fruity it sounds which, I concede, is partly down to the Brooklands can, but that's only half the story; Mike Pemberton put the engine together and went to great pains to get the valve timing as good as it could be. I think this means there is more valve overlap which means it goes and sounds better than any 'standard' ES2 I've seen or heard. I would recommend investigating the valve timing, the improvement in performance can be significant and that exhaust note.....
