ES2 side stand

Forums
In attempting to reduce the free play on the side stand (which has in the past resulted in the bike toppling over) I've managed to snap off one of the lugs on the stand itself (the unthreaded one). Does anyone know where I can source another stand (just the leg). I can't find one amongst the usual culprits. Thanks for any help.George

Oops! Forgot to say it's a 1955 model, ie pre-featherbed.
George,This is not going to be easy to find, I recognise these sidestands as I have a 1955 ES2 and an embryonic 1954 Model 7, which has a very similar (if not identical) leg. Even at autojumbles these are rare, so be prepared to quiz stallholders to see if they have any back at home.Best of luck, Philip

Thanks for that Philip. Bad news as I find it quite a struggle pulling it onto the centre stand. Has any one a view on the "universal" stands? George

Try"VINTELE" prop stand,works on my 49 ES2.

Hi George, before you condemn the stand to the bin an option is to weld it back to its original position.it is surprising what a reputable welder can achieve.he or she will prep the joint, bolt it together with the correct spacers(to stop distortion)and keep the reqd.clearance gap.if this is not possible a new end block could be made.like i say,a reputable welder.

I think the Vintele might be for rigid frames, Terry. Mine's swinging arm. Les - I am trying to get hold of a welder I know in Redruth who I'm sure could do it but it is a tiny lug and it's cast iron - I think. Thanks for the heads up Chris. BTW I tried running the bike onto a short length of 20mm deep timber so's the rear wheel was on it but not the front and it was much easier to pull it onto the centre stand. Problem is I can't lug a lump of wood around with me! Let's hope I winkle out the welding man.George

Update. My guy says it can't be welded but that he could make a steel one as I have the original as a pattern. May have to go that way.

Probably your best option and almost certainly more robust than a pattern cast item (if you can find one). Just for interest which version of the side stand do you have - attached to a bracket below the engine cradle or attached to the front engine mount? I find the one below the engine cradle less than stable, I have much more faith in the centre stand.

Hi Ian - good to hear from you. It attaches to a bracket that is secured by the front two engine mounting bolts. The bracket is OK but I've snapped one of the lugs off the stand leg itself. Hope to meet up at the Welbeck Hotel, Douglas on 25 August. George

Well done Ian! Found it. It'll be over £60 with p&p so I'll see what my guy can offer for making a steel one. There are several days left for bidding. Well spotted. BTW email received and noted. CheersGeorge

Ended up buying one from Norvil (!) who told me that it was incorrect to have a bolt through the top and it should have a pin held by circlips (despite the parts book showing a bolt with retaining nut). Anyway it's arrived and and it sort of fits. The pin is too large for the hole in the lug on the bracket and the stand sticks out awkwardly when at rest. It also points forwards quite a bit when in the down position. Nevertheless all these things are solvable. At £64.80 inc p& as against £340 on ebay I'll live with it. George

Any chance of a picture George. I've always fancied a side stand for my ES2 but never seen one at a reasonable price.Ian

I wonder if the Norvil leg is intended for the bracket that sits below the engine cradle. This type is fitted to my '56 19S and is secured by a pin rather than a bolt.

I'll try for a pic in the morning, Ian (G) although it looks at first glance just like the standard unit. Ian McD - I would say it's intended for the forward fitted bracket Ian as it does fit - just a bit sloppy. Once I've fitted it I can see if the bike leans at the right angle. I think it will be OK.

BTW Ian, I should add that I spoke with Norvil (Les?) who assured me it would fit a '55 ES2. I haven't taken a picture yet (Ian G) as the stand does not work. I will start a new thread about it under the heading Norvil side stand useless. George

To answer Ian's point about the engine cradle I'm now confused. The bracket on my bike is - according to the parts list - the one for a solid frame ES2 (mine's s/a). So it could be that someone has fitted the wrong bracket (it's easier as the drive side does not have to come off). I'll ty and attach some pics. GeorgeAttachments norton-stand-bracket-3-jpg

Quite right Les. This thread is about the correct (or otherwise) stand/bracket for the '55 ES2. I decided to start a new thread on the probs with Norvil to keep the two things separate. Sorry if it caused confusion. This thread started on the matter of sourcing the side stand and has (by my own hand) drifted into questioning whether in fact I have the correct bracket fitted. I still don't know. The answer to this may well affect how I deal with Norvil. Thanks for your pointers, Les. Regards, George
