Es2 plunger rear petrol tank/sprung seat support bracket - Help

Guys, I have an Es2 with plunger frame fitted with a Non Norton tank, when I took the tank off I was appalled to see that the bracket that holds the rear petrol tank and acts as a pivot for the seat nose has been cut of!!

I have seen various pictures of what should be there but can anybody provide a real close up photograph and possible dimensions - measurements to assist me in the fabrication of a replacement.

Hi Peter - I found these shots of my 1950 plunger ES2 taken several years ago . I cropped and enlarged them in hopes that they may be of some use to you but I have my doubts .

As Michael's photo shows the mount for the forward part of the seat frame as well as the rear tank mount is a lug that is part of the frame - hopefully this much is intact on your frame.

I also searched my Main-Smith copies of parts lists and workshop manuals and of course they show drawings of the area in question for Manx and Inter but not for the standard model - typical of the spotty nature of the era. I may be able to provide dimensions for the rear tank bracket without disassembly of my tank, etc . I will be away for a week but I will check this blog when I return and if still needed I will explore this at that time - sorry I could not be of more help

Thanks guys you have already been of some help. It looks from your pictures that the lug has two studs at the bottom and the actual tank mounting bolts to them? I thought it would be a one piece unit similar to the front mount. That being the case if I can get the bracket, the lug should be easier to fabricate. I have ordered a parts book from the National motorcycle museum. In the meantime any further assistance & information is greatly appreciated.

The tank bracket does indeed mount under the lug with two studs - see the second of the above photos I attached. I am including another photo I found as well as a sketch I made - this will likely be in two or more posts as I cannot seem to include more than one attachment per post - when I click the " add another attachment" button the first attachment disappears .

The bracket itself is a dog bone shaped stamping out of 7/32 " plate.

I've included only dimensions that I could accurately determine without disassembly .

If you are going to fabricate the bracket it may be wise to acquire the tank first to determine the size / spread of the holes . I wish I could provide complete information for you but hopefully this constitutes a start and is of some help -

Richard, that is brilliant thankyou. yes, I agree get a tank first before final fixing of the bracket.

Hopefully I will get as much information on the lug itself from the good people on this website, then I can crack on.

The holes in my lugs (1952 ES2) are elongated fore and aft - I assume to allow for manufacturing variation in the tanks......

On most singles there are four identical shouldered screws going up into threaded holes in corresponding plates welded below the tank. One 'top hat' rubber washer opposite one plane rubber washer isolate the bracket from the bolt, even though the bolt shoulderis tightened hard up. A large thin steel washer goes on top of the upper washer against the tank, and a large dished washer (visible in the photo posted above) goes under the bottom rubber washer to take the screw (bolt) head.

The identical design with identical parts that was used with four fixings on pre-war singles remained in use on the front two fixings on the slimline Dominator, so they are available from the usual sources.

Since the tank bottom is flat, the heights of all four corner supports are the same.

He has it labeled International......not.

You may want to consider purchasing this if it is still available -I could not fabricate one for that amount of money . If you are in the UK they may be more available but here in the USA these type of parts are not common

Hi Peter,

You didn't say what year your ES2 is as the rear tank lug/bracket changed in late 1949. All the earlier frames with the upright gearbox had the lug with thetank support allas one casting which was brazed to the top tube. All the frames which use the laydown gearbox had the detachable bracket as shown in all the pics on this thread. It sounds as though you have the earlier type that has had the support arms cut off which will mean cutting back what's left to fit the later detachable bracket ?? Or has the whole lug been removed.
