es2 clutch basket

I had a similar problem ,turned out to be bad register(spline stop) in the clutch spider .No spacer in the primary case ,if you fitted one it would only jam against the sleeve gear and mess up the gearchange.

As Robert says it could be the spline stop - there were/are some 'soft' ones out there, however, I can't see any wear on the clutch centre where it would contact the sleeve gear if it was really bad - it could just be your inner chain case needs a bit of 'tweaking'!

Hi Ian, John's spring studs/nuts are rubbing against the sliding plate in the case, just about visible in the foto's. Might also be caused by a parts missmatch ? .

I have seen washers fitted between the inner primary case lower fixing point and the head of the gearbox bolt. There is so little clearance in the case, that may be all it takes to cause the contact. A picture of the inner case might be useful - where is the contact on the case?

If there is room for the inner case to go back,that would help, or longer g/box shaft(exspensive!) , The register does look a bit suspect,difficult to see in that dark dark hole.

Sorry, didn't explain that too well. A washer should not be present in that location, it would push the inner case outwards, towards the clutch. The inner sliding plate assy looks a bit suspect, the pop rivets are non-standard so it has been disturbed at some point. Could it be thicker than normal? On my spare case the sliding plate sits no more than 1.8mm above the surrounding dished area, and well below the next raised area. Suggest you put a straight edge across it and compare with my photo.
