ES2 big end

Forums

I have purchased a new big end for my ES2 500 cc single norton engine number. 41050 4. 79 X 100 but it is too small for connecting rod E4099. It has a 1" 3/64 size pin and requires one with a pin 1" 17/64 . Can any one help? I wish to purchase the correct one immediately. Thankyou Trevor Dodd Aus

Hi Trevor,

The ES2 big-end remained unchanged from 1933 to 1963. The outer bearing ring that fits into the con-rod is 2 inches outside diameter. The flywheel journals are 1.020 inch. The centre bearing journal, which seems to be the problem, is approximately 1.135 inch butcan vary fractionally from one manufacturer to another but any variation is counteracted by the thickness of the outer ring as all makes use 34 (17 per row).250 inch rollers. A larger journal gives a larger clearance between the rollers. All this means you must fit the whole assembly as a matched unit. I'm not sure what crank-pin was fitted to your engine but 1 and 17/64 (1.265) inch doesn't seem to be a Norton part. Just a final note of caution, some of the newly made outer bearing rings might be slightly too big and when fitted to the rod may become oval and need honing.

Regards, Richard.
