Dominator 88ss steering head nut

Forums

Has anyone else had problems with the steering head nut undoing over a short period of time? I have a washer under the head but it still backs off.I have painted a whitness line on it so that I can see when it is loosening off.Any ideas on how to stop it would be appreciated

Thanks

Hi Colin. I wonder if the reason is that you have not loosened the two pinch bolts on the lower fork yolk.

After adjusting the steering head bearings, the stanchions willbe causedto move down slightly through the lower yolk after tightening down the the top yolk centre nut to which the stanchions are fixed to.

It could be that you are tightening down the centre nut and "Bowing Down" the top yolk as it cannot drive down the stanchions. This will leave the top yolk in a sort of flexed state and not in a solid clamp down onto the steering stem adjustment nut below the top yolk, this flexed state could then cause loosening of the nut.

So before you retighten down , slacken off the pinch bolts and tap the tops of each fork nut with a hide-mallet to make sure the stanchions are moved if they are sticking, then tighten the centre nut fully. Don't forget to retighten the pinch bolts finally.

Just to add that Iâve spotted I had described the fork components as YOLKS...oh dear, I didn't think that was correct spellingat the time and it isn't. Obviously I was referring to the top and bottom YOKES!

Bet every reader had a laugh at this so you could say Iâve got egg on my face nowâ?.dohâ?sorry for that very weak JOLK!
