Dollshead gearbox cover damage repair

Forums

Hi, I am new to the site as I have got myself an old 1943 16h in a very tatty condition. I have started the strip down to ID the parts to replace, but have come across damage to both the dolls head gearbox control cover and the end cover.

Both are in need of repair or replacement.

I would like to ask if spares are available for the aluminium covers and how to I get them as there is nothing on the web I can find?

Or can anyone please recommend a good repair shop or the right chap to talk to for a way forward?

Hi Jonathan - my alloy timing cover needed a new boss welded on the inside which then had to be threaded to take the pressure control valve. It cost me £84 all up.

I used Ex-press S W Ltd at Unit 4 Victoria Business Part, Roche, St AUSTELL, PL26 8LX. Tel 01726 891413.

They dealt with it all although they are not welders. They subbed that to another outfit in the same business park. Ex-press did the grinding down and re-threading.

They might be able to give you the name of the welding firm.

Hope this helps.

Very good, Colin. Looks as though it's at the base of the nib. But Jonathan would be interested where you had it done. Anywhere near Paignton?

No George

It was a company called Exactweld in East Grinstead (East Sussex). As well as specialist welding and fabrication for industry they always have a few bits exotica to repair from classic cars, bikes and even ww2 aircraft.

Many thanks to you all for your advise and help gents.

I have found a local welder in paignton who will weld it up for me for 30 quid. I have to do the prep, file out the threads etc. After that I can drill, tap and do the finish. So I hope that will sort the first major problems for the gear box?!

Engine next, so I will apologise now for the future 'HELP' question that are to come.

That is really great of you Jon, that is the same as the knackered one.

Look forward to finishing the gearbox to move onto the engine. Please add your address in the package Jon, so I can send some money for your postage and to cover the beers?

Thanks
