I am about to fit an Alton starter kit. With everything removed one has good access to the LH crankcase seal. I read somewhere it is a simple job to replace it. Given that the seal is probaby as old as the bike it seems sensible to replace it even though I don't think there is a problem.
Question: is it easy to replace? Is it just a matter of prising it out with a sharp tool and pressing in a replacement?
Yes, on the pre-Mk3 models…

Yes, on the pre-Mk3 models there is a shoulder behind the seal so it can't do other than come to sit square. Just be careful not to damage the surface of the crank where the seal runs.
My preference is to pierce the seal and screw in a self-tapper which can then be grasped with a small mole grip.
Thanks Richard, all I needed to know.

How does that differ from the MK3 model?
The pre mk3 cases have a shoulder which the seal stops against but the mk3 type cases do not have this shoulder which can make fitting the seal squarely and in it correct position relative to the crankshaft more difficult. Also the mk3 has a circlip to retain it which the earlier cases do not.
