Crank bearings

Forums

Sorry yet another problem, I have a new pair of crank bearings to fit, one of the new bearings that's a ball bearing has been machined on one side, unlike the one removed from the crank, which way it fits in my question.

Thank you yet again.

Hi Kelvin,

The ball bearing fits on the timing side and I would expect the machined side to go towards the flywheel. But check this with a trial fit on the crank first. There should also be a taper on the roller bearing on the drive side - again the taper towards the flywheel..

Strange thing is that the 'book' (genuine Norton original) does not mention any tapering or machining on the main bearings but to the best of my knowledge it is commonly accepted that the only difference between Dominator and Jubilee main bearings is this machining. I was told way back in the past that if you used the Dominator bearings in the Jubilee without machining a radius on them to match the Jubilee crank then you could expect main bearing trouble.

Sounds as if someone in the past has not done this. I suggest you do an email to Andy Sochanik -lightweight tech man- and just get confirmation on this.

It would make sence for the taper to fit against the crank but I thought I would seek advice before fitting, I have contacted Andy from the lightweight technical section, so hopefully he can help me out. I have had a look over the conrods and they look the same either way around, so I think I will fit them on with the big end locating tags away from the thrust side, its always fun building an engine from a box of spares, this must be one of the longest restoration as I have been doing for over three years, but with two other restorations getting in the way , a new baby, a wedding and a new house. So hopefully I can now get on with it.

Thank you for all the good advice.

Kelvin.
