Brake grease "nipples"

Forums

Whilst taking the front and back brakes apart to service them I noticed these, which I assume, are grease nipples on the end of the spindle bolts, only they're not actually nipples you can attach a grease gun to.

I cleaned them out with a thin wire. They were caked up with old dry gease. The thin channel that runs through these bolts is obviously to grease goes the spindles but I can't quite figure out how you'd inject the grease or what with?

I'd also assume they should have some kind of rubber dust cap to prevent ingress of dirt and dust.

Hi Graham, they are indeed grease nipples and yours have been badly abused when dismantling. There should also be another on the end of the brake pedal securing bolt.

They need carefully drilling or filing out.and and all scarfed removed before greasing.

I bought my grease gun in 1962 when I bought my Dominator 99 but have no idea if they are still available. The tip could be easily made if you have access to a lathe and a suitable tap to suit your gun.

Don’t be too energetic when greasing as you could easily end up with contaminated brake linings. I just smear the pins with a modern grease such as copper slip or silicon.

Dick

..I'd never use them but prefer to dismantle and smear the spindle with grease as then you know how much you've put in and where it's gone. A bit like the nipples in the middle of hubs which again I studiously ignore.

Don't be tempted to use copaslip or similar as that's anti-seize not a lubricant. I use an ordinary HMP lithium grease.

Push on grease nipples were normal.  Girder forks have lots of them. They work fine...if you put a scrap of cotton fabric over them.

But I'd never use a grease gun on brakes.  Except possibly when assembling on the bench.
