Having read the very informative article on the 961 Commando engine in Roadholder, I find that the crankshaft assembly is pressed and welded together with the big end and central main bearing in place. Is there any way the big ends and central main can be replaced without replacing the whole crankshaft assembly?
I will probably never own a 961, but as an enthusiastic home motorcycle mechanic, I would just like to know if there is a way. Maybe the factory does a re-conditioning service?

Welded Crankshaft is part of the Euro type 3 approval and it also part of the Anti-tampering measures that the EU are rolling out on new motorcycles. even the rear drive chain on the 961 as had the sound it makes recorded and has to come with in a DB noise level . the hand bars had to be the right length and so do the brake and clutch leavers the hoops and hurdles that this motorcycle company have had to go though are astounding, The EU Anti-tampering measure are so designed to put motorcyclist of buying a New Motorcycle. and the EU are also trying there level best to stop motorcycle being built in the first place, so you see why its taking so long for you to get your new 961. . just read some of MAG information on the EU protocol on motorcycles . Soon we will have a Euro type 4 approval. so when is this madness going to end . yours Anna J

Well put Anna, this is why we should all join MAG as it seems to be the sole voice we have to protect us from the EU madness. They are trying to destroy what we love. And please dont think that "oh ill never buy a new bike so it wont affect me" because it will. Sorry for thedowner, ride free while you still can.

I too am concerned about some of the more bizarre EU proposals regardingvehicles. However, I am pretty certain that the welded crankshaft on the 961 is an engineering choice, not a political one.

Ps and further more The New World order as No place for motorcycles . the Illuminati are trying there best to get rid of motorcycle transport. But they will have a very hard job So M.A.G needs your support to keep all motorcycle and there owners on the road without any erosion of there freedom ,its this very freedom that, The Illuminati are in fear of. They are the control freaks and are trying mind control on every motorcyclist and putting every obstacle in the way politically

The Douglas 2 1/4 HP (350cc) engine has a different crankshaft setup but which shares the same characteristic that big ends cannot be replaced, only the complete crankshaft/conrod assembly. The Douglas in the shed has been on its original set up for the last 100 years. Hopefully it will last a bit longer, despite lubrication being by total-loss splash and a hand pump. I wouldn't worry too much about the 961!
