Battery charging

I have a 2011 961 SE and it is fitted with a remote connection to alow the battery to be charged. However the connection to connect the charger was of a type I was not familiar with, having a male bullet connection side by side with a female bullet connector. My Ultimate charger did not have the correct connector. I have now found that the correct connector can be ordered from a dealer (such as Bikerbites) and the part number is 17 a TM to SAE Adaptor.

Hi David, I had the same problem with my 961 Sport and purchased a connector from Maplins.

John,

Re Maplins I had a look at their connector it was fine plugging into the bike harness but the other end would not plug into the Optimate. The connector (picture attached) from Optimate was only about £5.00.

Since buying the optimate lead, I have discovered that ihas been wired up the wrong way round, so if when you plug your charger into the remote connection you get a short light then check the lead!!

Bob, yes I had the Optimate style connector re wired and works fine. It was disappointing to find an error with the wiring on the connector as supplied from Optimate.

My dealer installed the standard charger connector which fits about 90% of the chargers out there ! Unfortunately for me I have a Ctek 3300 Charger ( excellent unit ) which uses a propietery connector. I choose to buy another connector and fabricate a cable that would fit my Ctek so that the bike would still connect to most of the "other" chargers!

Hi

i have just joined and recently purchased a 961 sport 2011.

i have the CTEK charger too and would agree its a great product and would like to use it to keep my 961 battery in optimum condition. I have the remote battery charger cable under the seat, mine too has the single male terminal on a thicker black wire and a pair (red and black) thinner wires (1male and 1 female) all three are in the same cable sheath and are joined together in two black mating connectors .

i assume i just terminate the ctek comparable connector to the red and black two thinner wires , is this correct and does anyone know what the thicker black wire is for please ?

I have found the factory very helpful so will call them if need be , but just found this post so hoped someone may know the answer. .

Thanks

Hi

Managed to solve this query myself after the lack of response. The standard Norton connector is an SAE type and the third thicker black wire is only for mechanical support and not connected electrically

To get it to work with a CTEK charger i ordered an SAE double ended cable off ebay which comes from Towzatronics( 0115 837 0245) as their part number BC1012 cost 3.45. This has an SAE connector either end, cut it the end that is polarised to mate with your bike. Then obtain a standard CTEK charger cable with ring terminals, cut the ring terminals off and join to the SAE cable . i soldered the joints and covered in heatshrink .

Hey presto its now charging !

Graham , i still have the other end of the SAE cable as it was double ended (one male black and one male red ) and I only used the male black end , also a spare ctek ring terminal cable,pm me your address and I will post both bits to you foc if you need them . The polarity will be wrong on the SAE end, but you can reverse it when you join it to the CTEK end to compensate .

I cant help you with led indicator relays though , although think I have used emgo flasher relays before for normal filament bulbs .

cheers
