Hi, I am looking for some information on the repair of a an Advance & Retard unit, The unit is stiff and does not fall back to the the retard position.
Could anyone give me some information on how you take it apart and clean it thoroughly.
Many thanks

Is it still on the bike? It won't necessarily operate properly if it's still mounted on the magneto because the little bob weight springs won't pull the magneto armature past the magnet until it's all spinning. Sorry if you know this...but I once thought mine was stuck but it works perfectly.

Automatic Advance & Retard unit on a Dominator 1955 88super 500
Hi thankyou for your comments.
On taking it off, it is free, but when i put it on and as soon as I nip it up it jams, but I don't think it should be loose.
Does anyone have any ideas please.
Grateful for any help.
Regards

Lucas Auto Advance Units
Hi Leonard & co
Years ago I was fretting about Auto Advance Unit not fully returning. Just to be free and lubricated.
Les Emery, who worked at Lucas, fortunately, reassured me they are not meant to fully return.
New springs are now available, + other Lucas parts, from Rex 's Speed Shop.
Hope that helps.

Get it soaking in releasing fluid for a while and see if it frees at all. The unit is held together by the round steel boss at the leading edge of the the central fixing. It is an interference fit on to the shaft but will free with gentle heat. It's better to remove the springs before applying a heating torch. When the boss is removed all the main parts will be removable. To remove the fixing bolt it has a left-hand thread which requires pulling to engage with the female thread on the outer portion. The oilte bush may require a little work to free it and sometimes the steel rivets get worn and need replacement. Also the spring carriers wear with time. Do persevere with the initial soaking before you take it apart. Good luck, Howard
