99 rear wheel bearing

Forums

Hi,   Advise needed, I have removed the old bearings from the wheel as per the manual but found a double row bearing on the brake side and 2 single row bearings on the other side, query is this correct as the manual states 1 double and 1 single.

Some later (Commando) hubs have 3 bearings .  I would compare your hub with another STD one to see  what  has changed. If it has been modified to take an extra bearing (and it works) I see that as a good thing.

Hi Peter. My 1960 Dommie 99 has one double row and one single row. Like yours, it has the double row on the brake plate side. It’s the original rear wheel, so as Robert has said, maybe your wheel is from a different model.

If it is a 99 hub that has been modified, I can see  that if on a single bearing set up the bearing fails far from home ,you are  F---------kd.  With twin bearings you would feel or hear  one get rough but still be able to ride home  on the other.

Thank you Robert and Tony, you comments are greatly appreciated,  I must assume it’s a modification as I failed to mention the brake is a twin leader.
