Hi,
my 500T is very bad at starting and runs quite lumpy and rich. But getting any information on settings is proving difficult.
Any help with valve clearance and timing, plug gap, points gap/timing and a base setting for the carb would be really appreciated.
Am I right in thinking the engine is the same as the ES2?
Thanks again for any assistance.

Lumpy and rich can be down…
Lumpy and rich can be down to poor ignition, After fixing the ignition my bike ran evenly and with clean plugs.. then I greased the carb slide, which made it run lumpy and rich. Don't do that!.

According to Bacon's book…
According to Bacon's book "Norton Singles" the carb settings for the 500T are:Type - 276; size - 1 1/16; Main jet - 160; slide - 6/4; needle position - 3. Also the point gap is 0.012". Hope this helps. George

If timing and tappets are…
If timing and tappets are spot on with all valves bedded correctly then the Carb is worn, slide never in the same place twice as its rattling in the bore (be it minimal (air / fuel mixture never stable. set it, runs, moves hence lumpy. Otherwise bore / slide scored
New 276 from AMAL at £285 is the answer I am afraid.

Just think what your poor 500T has endured? That carb has endured mud / water and all other types of nasties in its life. No fancy air filtration like modern bikes. That may of caused the wear a bit of grit etc. My 500T was the same till Mr Surrey Cycles and a race bike builder in Boston (his son is a famous super bike racer...lovely man), told me the same thing...."change the carb Sir: she is worn.....ran like a dream when I did. Expensive but so is your 500T at the end of the day. Just tell her indoors its an investment she will understand!

As far as I know it is the same as the es2? Valve clearance is just enough to spin the push rods when it is cold.
