Gents,

I finally had a chance to test out the bike since being bought as a Christmas present…yeah! After a short ride, I noticed that the shifter is sloppy. Goes into first nice and then clicks to second but when I go for third it seems to drop down and I have to click the shift lever up slightly then back to third. This is the dumb question…I’m assuming this is a four speed and I cannot get it to go into  fourth because the shift lever bottoms out completely.  the shift lever adjustable rod is also on the “max shortened” Im going to assume this needs to be lengthened to get the thing into fourth? 

I have seen some parts on “RacingNorton”.com…prices seem reasonable.

.. at the centralising spring in the outer casing. If this is a bit weak or not centralised then you can get this sort of effect.

With respect to the adjustable rod, you need to remove it then get the gearbox in neutral and the gearchange lever in a central position. Then adjust the rod so the clevis pins just slide in. You should not need to change the rod.

It's more complicated to explain than to do.

Thanks for the reply. I’m going to assume the centralizing spring would also be called “ gear change return spring for positive stop selector mechanism” on the “Racingnorton.co.Uk” website? As for the rod…it knackered up so the same website has a new setup very cheap… I will replace.  have any out you guys had issues with selector mechanisms or pawls going bad?

If the spring is OK, try adjusting the link so the pins are free when in second and third gears.  First and fourth should then sort themselves out.

The selector ratchet is on a plate mounted on a pin, which can wear eventually.  Very similar to the prewar doll's head, but they improved the ratchet to reduce wear post war. Don't know if it was the later design in yours.
