20 inch tyres

Forums

I'm nearly at the stage where I am ready to get some wheels built up for my Inter project and it should be a 20 inch on the back. But I dont seem to be able to find much in the way of 20 inch tyres. I have found some 20x325 but would prefer something a bit wider on the back for road use.

Does anyone know of any supliers for these? If I cant find anthing I'm tempted to go for a 19inch rear wheel to make getting tyres easier.

Hi Andy,

There is very, very little on the market in the way of 20" rear tyres and 325 will be about the widest there is available. As far as I know there are only 300x20 and 325x20 listed because there is so little demand on this size as a rear. Pre war machines used this size but there were few that had a 20" rear wheel post war.

Most convert to a 19" because of the vast selection in this size.

Andy,

The 20" rear wheel is one of the quirks of the Inter which should be preserved if possible. I bought a tyre from Tony Etheridge, albeit at the Stafford Show in 2002, and it was an Avon SM 3.50 x 20". The tread looks half way to a trials pattern but you can't be choosy. It cost me £81 back then.

Whether these are still available I don't know but the status used to be that every so often a batch would be made. With the number of Inters coming out of the woodwork these days I guess batches might still be forthcoming. It would be worth doing a run just to keep Bristol Branch's collection of Inters going.

Just go to the Suppliers & Services directory on this site to find a long list of tyre suppliers including the one I have mentioned.

Hi re 20" tyres, you have a choice of at least three, Avon do a 3.50x 20, these are ok but a little square in profile, Ensign do a 3.00 x 20, I have not tried one so cannot comment, Mitas do a 3.00 x 20 these seen to be closer to a 3.25 x 20 [ almost identical to an original old tyre I have] and work ok on the road and the profile shape looks fine and con be had for nearly half the price of an Avon. Vintage Tyre supplies have Ensign and Avon in stock as well as tubes and Avon 21" front ribbed tyres if required, a credit card and phone will get one to you quickly, as for the Mitas they are stocked by several tyre finder type concerns found at the shows and often on ebay. Be aware that many of the suppliers supply a 19" tube for your 20" tyre so ask before you buy if that would concern you, I am not sure of the merit of using a 19" tube and have had conflicting advice when I have enquired.Hope that helps.

Hi Andy/All, I was about to mention about Vintage Tyre Supplies, but see that Will beat me to it! . . . I have one sat in my back living room/office reserved for one of my bikes.

By the way, I have a small quantity of 20" chrome rims available with correct spoke arrangement for Norton 'cotton reel' rear hubs.

Best wishes,

Paul

I would not use a 19" tube in a 20" case ,if you get a puncture they sometimes tear,as well as making tyre fitting difficult. No I dont own any Inters as I have not won the Lotto(yet),only Ariels with 20" wheels.Regards John.
