1960 ES2 AMC GEARBOX

Forums

Dear Members,

I have a 1960 ES2 with an AMC gearbox that has been trouble free until last week-end. When setting off from home it goes into first without difficulty but, with increasing frequency, it does not click through neutral into second. Repeated pressing down of the gear lever now seldom induces it to go into neutral and then into second. On the odd occasion when it does click through neutral into second there is then no problem changing up into third and top nor changing down through the various ratios.

It first occurred about a month ago but once warm did not happen again. Now however it has become too risky when riding in traffic. I'm absolutely confident in my ability to fix it but wondered if anyone else had experienced a similar problem and what the cause was? I suspect a defective gearchange return spring but before I strip it I'm canvassing members' experience.

Regards,

Peter Bolton

That is exactly how my Commando behaved for the few days preceding the pawl return spring snapping and leaving me stranded.
