Assuming that yours is the engine with the flat lever followers (and not a 1948 model year bike produced after September 1947) then you have one with not particularly easy spares availability. This engine was used for 1939 /'39 and again post-war 1946/'47. The flat followers on the OHV engines can and do break and are hard to find.

The Club spares scheme are always worth asking of course.

Russell Motors are always worth asking for single-cylinder parts - best to phone as Les Myers doesn't do internet.

Bantam John took over all the old single-cylinder specialist Dragon Motorcycle's stuff years ago but I don't know how much he has left. My impression is that he doesn't have Norton single parts made.

Valves themselves are available from G&S in Godalming and are very high quality.

Otherwise, it's down to eBay and asking around.

I didn't realise Russell Motors were still around. I remember using them in the 70s for 16H and Model 18 parts.

Thank for the replys but what I am really trying to find out as well as a supplier of part in the uk is what part could be missing front the timing side as I'm looking in to this for a friend of mine and I have not yet got to see youthe engine in question from what he has told me the timing side of engine is the same as model 18 there are two threaded holes in the casing which look as if there should be something screwed in there when we have looked on the net it shows but he is saying that the pushrod are only about 3/8 in off the lifters but I can not find a diagram of the hole set up the bike was a complete basket case so may have wrong pushrod sorry if this is a bit hard to under stand but when I visite at weekend I will try and get some pictures to upload and an engine number it's suppose to be a 1947 es2

Richard, Why do they break ? Did the 38 ES2 also have the flat followers ?

This does concern me as April nears I'll be going to get my 38 ES2 . I've seen some articles of guys riding their 36 on Es2's & 18s on long distance rides with no issues.

just how concerned should we the owners of Mid 30's singles be?

Nothing would really P&*s me off to spend the $$$ only to have it parked because of a part that is very hard to find.

I find it strange the NOC doesn't produce these hard to find parts.

Ian I agree that the club should encourage the supply of hard to find parts, but the spares scheme is entirely voluntary and not run on a commercial basis. Indeed, I'm not even sure that it is at present operating.I have apart that has beenon order since11th of January and my calls and emailsgo unanswered. As I said, running the spares scheme like other club positions is voluntary and must be regarded as such.
