1947 Big 4 kick start return spring installation

Forums

I am installing a new kick start return spring purchased from NOC and the manual notes to tension the spring so that the tail goes into the third slot from it's free position. The free position is midway between two slots. I can tension the spring to get it into the second slot (effectively 21/2 slots) but it is extremely difficult to get it into the third slot.

The main problem is that whenthe tailgoes into the second slotit immediately jumps out due to the difference in the spring coil diameter over that of the kick start shaft. When tensioned the spring twists due to the clearance over the shaft andjumps out of the slot.

Has anyone got any experience of this problem and the way to get round it?

Any comments will be gratefully received.

Thanks.

My book (Edgar Franks) suggests the second not the third slot. It can be tricky....

I found the best way was to make a loop of thin wire and use that to pull the tail of the spring into position. Then maintain pressure on it while sliding the steel spring cover over the spring which stops the end in the kickstart shaft from jumping out.

It still took me several attempts.....

IAN,

Thanks for response.

I have used the thin wire to pull the end round as you suggested. This works ok but it is keeping the whole spring in position so the tail end does not jump out. I shall try putting the metal cover on as you suggested which as you say should centralise and keep the spring engaged. Good idea!

I shall let you know if this is successful when I have a go tomorrow.

Thanks again.

Godfrey.

Ian,

I have now managed to get the spring on and the metal cover put back in place.

I used a tie wrap to hold the end of the spring in the slot and then put a jubilee clip around the spring to hold it in place. Then removing the tie wrapI put a single strand of locking wire over the tail of the spring and removed the jubilee clip. The locking wire was only 1mm in dia. and the metal cover slipped over this. The wire also reduces the clearance over the tail of the spring ensuring it will not come out. The kick start now works very well.

Thanks for your help.

godfrey.
