16H toolbox

Forums

Hi you guys

Has anybody seen a toolbox similar to the one on my 16H

It has the lock missing and I'm sort of hoping one of you maybe could give me some information about what I should be looking for as a replacement or is it just a case of hunting through an autojumble.

I'm attempting to add a photo but not sure if it will work!

Cheers

Stuart

Hello, sorry to say it don't look like any toolbox I have ever seen. There seems to be different types even on the WD model. Most are bottom hinged and yours seem to be upper hinged on the photo. Most of them are wider than yours. They are locked by a screw with a chromed or painted lever. From which year is is yours?

Hi Mike

I believe it to be 1941

I have only seen top hinged ones apart from mine.

Oh well I'll just look around for something that fits. It certainly looks like a key shaped hole in the lid.

Thanks Mike

Up to 1935 they were hinged at the top.http://www.vintagenorton.com/2010/02/tims-1935-16h-norton.htmlAnd the civilian boxes were narrower than WD so that might be what you have. Unless they went back to the pre-1936 design after the War? Seems unlikely - allegedly owners did not like tools falling into the road whenever they opened the lid.The various holes in yours don't seem to line up with the suitcase catch at the bottom since there are round holes in the lid and none visible in the box. Maybe they were soldered over? And the three holes plus three studs at top centre don't seem to do anything - so it look like someone made some mods at some time over the last 80 years! The other box does not look like Norton. Maybe Enfield?Call it all 'history'!

Thanks Dave.

So much knowledge on this site.

So it is what it is.

I just absolutely love riding her and I'll just keep her running as best as I can.

Thanks again. Much appreciated.

It looks, to me, as though your toolbox may have been made by a sheetmetal worker, who was fed up with having his toolkit stolen! The door looks to be standard steel cabinet design. Here is a link to the style of lock probably fitted. For some reason it does not appear possible to paste a link into this post. If you look at the "ironmongery diirect" website and look for a "1 lever straight cupboard lock" this should show you.

You should be able to find one with the correct hole centres etc. and rivet it to the door or use round head screws and fill the slots to look like rivets.

Hi Rod

I was thinking along those lines myself. I just wanted to see if it was a familiar item with any of you guys first.

Thanks very much. All advice and input greatfully received.

It's not that I actually know a lot - just that (as my boss once said) I know more and more and more about less and less and less until I know absolutely everything about nothing at all!

Shame on your boss.

I think you guys give out lots of good advice and share all your knowledge with no thought of any gain and I appreciate it hugely.

Thanks
