16H pilot air screw

Forums
I did about 60 miles last Saturday and all was fine (apart from the rain...) but Sunday running round locally it seems to be lumpy at low speeds. Plug is very sooty. But I don't understand why it seems to have 'gone off' suddenly. After lots of searching (on this site and elsewhere) I still don't understand the pilot air circuit. Moving my air screw has no effect whatsoever and I don't think it ever has. I do know this screw was about the only thing missing when I got the bike so I wonder if I just have the wrong one? Are there several options?Oddly: when I take it apart, there is a hole within the jet block main air passage through which I can see the side of the tip of the screw. Beyond that is a another hole into the jet block meeting lust beyond the tip of the screw but it does not line up with anything. So I don't see how the screw an do anything.Any assistance, idea or pointers much appreciated. But of course - the problem might just be the spark plug...

hello again - back with this. I think I'm finding out about the pilot circuit in the 276 at last.I suspect I might have an early (prewar) internal block with a ring of holes around the bottom. But the body has no holes. Is it WD or later I wonder? There is a hole on the centreline of the block for the fuel+air exit from the pilot gallery. . ('Block pic 1)But the inlet into the body just to lower left (Body pic 2) has no corresponding hole in the body.SO: how to I get air into the gallery at the tip of the pilot needle? Do please does anyone know if I should drill the body directly from outside, or do I drill the block? And if I drill the bock - which direction?Any good photos of the later block would be helpful. Many thanks!(I might have to add a second mail with pic 2).RegardsDavidAttachments block-pic-1-jpg
